Geological Hazard Monitoring

Seismic Monitoring Studies:

Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) is designated as the Nodal Agency in the State for monitoring Seismic activity in the State. The Centre has been maintaining a 14 VSAT Enabled & Solar Powered Permanent Seismic Monitoring Stations (PSMS) Network in the State from the Year 2009. The Stations include 10 Major Dam Site Locations operational at Almatti (Bijapur), Hidkal (Belagavi), Linganmakki (Shivamogga), Supa (Uttara Kannada), Tunghabadra (Bellary), Hemavathi (Hassan), K.R.S (Mysuru-Mandya), Harangi (Kodagu), Gundal (Chamarajnagar) & T.G. Halli (Bengaluru) and 4 Non-Dam locations at Gulbarga, Raichur, Chitradurga & Udupi districts. These 14 Observatories were made operational based on geological importance and vulnerability of these regions.

The capabilities of the said Network are :

  • Appropriate setup of Broadband Seismometers (CMG-3T), Strong Motion Accelerographs (CMG-5T), Digital Data Acquisition Systems (CMG-DM24-S6-EAM) synchronized with GPS and Solar Power Supply System (12V for Seismic Instrumentation & 24V for the VSAT Equipments) and associated accessories with VSAT Connectivity for data transmission to the Master Control Facility Centre (MCFC) located at KSNDMC, Bangalore on Real time basis.
  • Unambiguously locating every possible Earthquake (Local, Regional & Teleseismic) with Magnitudes M≥1.2 within the State for Local tremors and Regional & Teleseismic Events within the Country and outside the Country too.
  • Every likely earthquake location in the State is within a distance of 100-150 kms from a minimum of 9-10 Seismic stations which can record all the three components of Ground Motion namely, Vertical (Z), North-South (NS) and East-West (EW).

Scientific approaches currently adopted to enhance our resilience to the Earthquake hazard are:

  • The first is aimed at providing long term protection to life and property which involves estimation of the Earthquake hazard in different areas of a region and its translation into Engineering aspects for Earthquake resistant structures and land use patterns in the area.
  • The second adopted along with the first is to keep a constant vigil on the evolving character of ground motion records emitted by small earthquakes from a wide area which is achieved by the said Network.
The 14 Seismic Monitoring Observatories of the said Network of Karnataka is established towards Dam Safety monitoring wherein 10 Observatories are located in Dam Site locations taking into consideration the monitoring of the Dam Induced Seismic activity. The seamless Seismic data is received at the MCF, Bangalore through a dedicated 20 kbps Bandwidth from the VSAT Enabled PSMS Network and is analysed in terms of Local, Regional & Teleseismic Earthquakes. The analysed information is being made available to decision makers of the State, District and Taluk level through this Centre’s web portal www.ksndmc.org; e-mail, SMS and also followed by technical reports.
Periodical reports on the Quarry blasts being recorded in the vicinity of the VSAT Enabled PSMS Network are being prepared and submitted to the officials as and when requested. Information is disseminated through Daily Earthquake Reports for Local, Regional & Teleseismic Earthquakes. Technical Reports of Local Tremors within the State, if any, are provided to the concerned district DC, AC, Tahsildars, Village heads, Dam Site officials including Chief Engineer and media personnel for information and necessary action to be followed up.
In the event of repeated Seismic Activity in a particular region, additional Sensors are established on a temporary basis and Workshops & Capacity Building programmes are taken up to the community level in co-ordination with the District Administration.
