Department of Hydrology

Hydrology is the scientific study of the movement, distribution, and management of water on Earth, including the water cycle, water resources, and environmental watershed sustainability. A practitioner of hydrology is called a Hydrologist. Hydrologic cycle or Water Cycle includes precipitation, Runoff, stream flow, infiltration and ground eater, eventual evaporation and re precipitation. Hydrology is concerned with the physical, chemical and physiological reaction of the water with the rest of the earth and its relation to the life of the earth.
Activities in this department aid many scientific studies and inputs for major hydrological aspects of draught/ flood, Reservoirs and minor irrigation tanks in the entire state of Karnataka. The activities in the department further expand to large scale urban hydrological studies. Urban flood forecast and Early warning system is developed and is functioning from the year 2016.

The various tasks carried out in the hydrology section are:

  • Collection, compilation, validation, analysis and report generation of Hydrological information of all the major reservoirs and minor irrigation tanks in the state.
  • Analysing the ground water level data and preparing the status report.
  • Studying the hydrological aspects of Drought.
  • Assisting the technical committee on inter-state water disputes like Cauvery and Krishna.
  • Installation and commissioning of Telemetric Rain gauges (100), Telemetric Weather Stations (12), Telemetric Water level Sensors across storm water drains (26, and proposed for more number of installations) in BBMP area, Bengaluru City.
  • Periodically updating the FVA (Flood Vulnerable Area) in BBMP area, Bengaluru City.
  • Hydrological simulation of all the major watersheds in the city (Hebbal Valley, Vrishabhavathi Valley and Koramangala Chellaghatta Valley) for different hydrological analysis and technical inputs for various applications.
